The square dance activity has worked for many years toward the goal of getting square dancing recognized as the National Folk Dance. There are currently 31 states that have designated square dancing as their "state dance," "state folk dance," or "state American folk dance". The passage of a bill would give square dancing and its related activities more visibility and have a positive effect on recruiting new dancers. The National Folk Dance Campaign is on hold until we can get support to submit a new bill. National Square Dancing Day exists to celebrate the square dance form of folk dancing, and is a great excuse to get out and dance. This is a fun, healthy and simple form of dance with a long history.
